The afro comb with a raised fist handle is a well known emblem of Black pride from the Black Power era. Here a South African artist paints it in gold between two portraits, as a symbol of identity, dignity and resistance carried in an everyday object.

An original mixed media painting on canvas, 80 x 55 cm, in blues, greys and gold. Two faces in cool blue grey sit either side of a golden afro comb whose handle is a raised fist, against a pale blue ground run through with drips. Dark hair rises like a crown above each head, and the comb's long teeth reach down between them. In the artist's words, the painting turns the comb into "a powerful symbol of inner strength", linking it to the Black Power movement, where the comb stood for pride and defiance, and to "the personal battles we fight to maintain who we are". This is a single original by South African artist Gary Frier, signed lower right. His Matriarch and Rousing Grace are also in this shop. Keep it out of direct sunlight.

Gary Frier (b. 1972, Cape Town) creates culturally and socio-politically charged work. After graduating in Graphic Design (2004), he left the design industry for a personal artistic practice. His work juxtaposes contemporary and historical African elements with strong graphic quality, reflecting his place in the world. Frier also facilitates art and pottery at Valkenburg Psychiatric Hospital. His work is held in major collections, including Iziko South African National Gallery, and has been exhibited widely. He lives and works in Kuilsriver.
