Please note

Each carrier is cut from the cloth and beaded by hand, so the check placement and bead strands vary a little from the photographs, and colours can differ between screens. The photographs show the carrier against a plain edited background. The bottle is not included.

Cultural context & artisan story

The red check cloth is shuka, the blanket fabric worn across Maasai country, so recognisable that it reads as Kenyan at a glance. Red is the colour most tied to Maasai dress, standing for bravery and unity, and the blue and white beads pick up the sky and peace in Maasai bead colour tradition. This carrier puts that cloth to a modern use without losing where it comes from.

Product description

Overview

A drawstring bottle carrier sewn from red check Maasai shuka cloth with a black fabric top. It holds a standard wine or spirit bottle, closing around the neck with a red braided drawstring finished in wooden beads, and decorated with strands of blue, white and red seed beads ending in a small metal disc. It turns a bottle into a gift in one move, so it suits housewarmings, weddings, dinners and any occasion where the wrapping should say as much as the bottle, and between occasions it stores the bottle looking better than a box would. The maker gives the size as about 35 cm tall and 10 cm across the base. The carrier is sewn and beaded by hand in Kenya. Spot clean with a damp cloth and let it dry away from direct heat.
