Please note

This is a hand painted original, so the knife and brush marks belong to this piece alone and colours can look different on a screen. There is one only. The second photograph is a close detail of the bare tree at the left of the painting, showing the canvas weave and the thickness of the paint. No frame is shown in the photographs or listed, so please ask before ordering if you want to know whether the canvas arrives stretched on a frame or rolled in a tube.

Cultural context & artisan story

The artist says the painting is inspired by scripture, and the line he gives is from Psalm 126, they that sow in tears shall reap in joy. The title carries the same idea of a season that turns, sowing followed by harvest. What is actually on the canvas is an ordinary sight across Ghana and the wider region, produce carried home balanced on the head, painted here at the end of the day with the light already going warm.

Product description

Overview

An original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing three figures carrying the harvest home on their heads under a wide blue sky. It suits a hallway, a landing or a study, anywhere a wall needs warmth without noise. The paint is laid on with a knife. The ground is built up in thick ochre and rust strokes that stand off the canvas, while the sky is scraped thin enough for the weave to show through, and the second photograph is a close crop of the bare tree at the left where both are easy to see. The three figures are painted from behind with their faces turned away, which is what makes the picture read as a memory of a walk home rather than a portrait of anyone in particular. The bowls of red, green and yellow produce carry the only clean colour in the piece and they sit right at the top, so the eye climbs. Original acrylic on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, roughly 33 by 51cm. The artist signs his work LEXIS and the signature is painted into the lower right corner in dark red. There is one of this painting and no second copy. Hang it out of direct sunlight and dust it with a dry soft brush.
