Overview
Interwoven belongs to Victor Ubabike's ongoing scarf series. Across that series one elongated scarf keeps returning, and it carries the meaning of the work. It stands for identity, and it takes a different shape on every canvas it appears on. Here it doubles back through itself, which is where the painting gets its name. The surface is built up in layers of acrylic, in the flat planes and hard edges of the style he calls Geometric Figurative Expressionism. Colour does structural work rather than decorative work. The blocks sit against each other instead of blending, and the painting holds together the way a mosaic does. At 96 by 107 cm it takes a wall on its own.
