Handmade, so the paint finish varies between pairs and every stone is set by hand. The photographs show three pairs: the yellow buttons appear both with a lilac stone and with a green stone, and the pink buttons with a lilac stone. The maker's idea is that a button spends its working life holding clothes together while hearing everything said over it, and moving it to the ear only makes the listening official. Setting a stone into one carries the argument a step further, because it asks you to treat the cheapest thing in the sewing box the way you would treat a jewel. The pieces are made in Ibadan, Nigeria, and the connection to the continent here is the maker rather than a motif.

Stud earrings made from small dished wooden buttons with a faceted stone set into the well of each one, sold as one pair in yellow or pink. The setting is what separates these from the plain button studs in the same collection. The button is deep enough to hold the stone the way a ring holds one, so the finished earring reads as a small vintage brooch rather than as a button with a gem stuck on the front. The buttons are hand painted and the finish is glossy, so both the yellow and the pink sit closer to a sweet shop colour than to a wood tone. The stone sits down in the hollow rather than proud of the face, so there is nothing to catch on a scarf. The post is fixed to the back of the button, so nothing shows from the front. Keep them dry. Wood and water do not agree, so take them off before washing your face.
