Mother and Son is an original acrylic painting on canvas, 13 by 20 inches, showing a young mother in profile with her child carried on her back. She is painted in broad flat strokes of red, violet, green and pale gold, and the same colours run through the wall behind her, so the figures and the background are built from one palette rather than set apart. A single gold earring catches the light at her ear. The child is wrapped against her shoulder with only the top of the head showing, which is how the whole story of the painting is told in one small shape. This is the canvas itself, not a print or a reproduction. It is signed Lexis in the lower right corner and there is only one of it. The second photograph is a close view of the head and shoulders, where you can see the ridged paint and the dry scraped marks that a print can never give you.
