Ankara is the wax print cloth worn across West and Central Africa and now printed and sewn all over the continent. This set is cut and sewn in Nairobi, so the cloth tradition and the tailoring come from different parts of the continent: a West African print vocabulary, an East African workshop, and a silhouette, off shoulder with a laced back, that belongs to neither and is simply current. The cube print is an isometric block design, the kind that reads as three dimensional from across a room and flat up close.

A two piece Ankara set in cream, red and navy, with an off shoulder top and matching high waisted wide leg trousers. The back of the top is the part worth studying in the photographs. It closes with a corset style lace up over a panel rather than a zip, so the top tightens or loosens across a couple of inches. On an off shoulder top that matters more than usual, because the fit at the bust is the only thing holding it up. The print is an isometric cube design, a cream ground with red and dark navy blocks, and it runs across both pieces so the set reads as one outfit rather than two separates. The sleeves are long and gathered full to a cuff at the wrist, and the top is fitted through the body with a short flare at the waist. The trousers are high waisted and cut wide and full to the floor.
