Cultural context & artisan story
This oil painting of an African mother and child was born from a desire to honour the timeless, protective bond of motherhood wrapped in traditional heritage. The intricate, colourful patterns of the headwrap contrast with the serene, deep slumber of the child against the mother's chest. Working with oil allows the artist to build rich, luminous layers, giving the skin realistic depth, the fabrics tactile vibration, and the whole composition a glowing, meditative presence.

Product description
Overview
An original oil painting of a mother and sleeping child, 122 by 91 cm on stretched canvas. The mother bends her head to the baby asleep against her chest, wrapped together in a cloth whose colours repeat through her headwrap, with a carved hoop earring and stacked bangles painted in close detail. The artist builds the skin and fabric in layered oils, which gives the surface its glow in the photographs, and the short video on this page shows him holding the finished canvas, so what you see is the actual painting that ships. There is one only. It is a centrepiece scale work for a living room, bedroom or entrance wall. Keep it out of direct sunlight and dust it with a dry soft brush.
