Cultural context & artisan story

Known in Ghana as fugu or batakari, the smock comes from the north of the country, where cotton is woven into narrow strips on a loom and sewn together by hand. It is worn across Ghana today, by chiefs at festivals and by Ghanaians at home and abroad on days of national pride.

Product description

Overview

A men's Ghana smock in navy hand woven cotton with gold and orange stripes. Narrow woven strips, navy with pale blue blocks, are sewn together and flare into deep pleats below the chest, broken by wide bands of gold. The front is quilted with rows of white running stitch, and the keyhole neckline is outlined in white embroidery and lined with a green patterned cloth. The sleeves are short and wide. Wear it over jeans or dark trousers, or dress it up for a wedding, a naming ceremony or Independence Day. The same seller also has a navy smock with yellow stripes and a maroon one. It is one size, and the seller gives its measurements as 127 x 81 cm. Hand woven, 100% cotton.
