Cultural context & artisan story

Krobo beads come from the Krobo hills of Ghana's Eastern Region, where beadmakers have turned recycled glass into beads for generations. Bottles and broken glass are ground to powder, packed into clay moulds and fired, and patterns are added in ground glass before a second firing fuses them into the bead. In Ghana glass beads mark life's milestones, worn at naming ceremonies, festivals and weddings. A necklace like this carries that tradition in an everyday piece.

Product description

Overview

A handmade Krobo glass bead necklace in yellow with patterned tube beads. Strung by hand in Ghana, it alternates bright yellow glass discs with patterned tube beads in red, blue, green and white, and ties with a soft cotton cord. The beads are made the Krobo way, from recycled glass ground to powder, moulded and fired, then patterned and fired again, which is why no two beads are ever quite alike. At about 60 cm it sits low on the chest and holds its own over a plain shirt or a kaftan. If you prefer something quieter, the shop's cream Krobo necklace is the softer choice, and the glass bead bracelet shown looped around this necklace is sold separately in the shop.
