Brushstrokes #1 is a small original abstract in watercolour on fabric, 5.3 by 6.7 inches, signed Moses Wainaina and made in Kenya. It is the first piece in an ongoing series exploring geometry through painting. Nested rectangles of indigo blue and dark brown are dragged across a pale ground, and because the paint sits on cloth rather than paper, every stroke catches on the weave and the texture of the fabric shows through. The artist calls the approach abstrart. At this size it suits a shelf, a desk or a narrow stretch of wall, the places a large canvas cannot go. A note from the artist for collectors: as the first piece in the series, the buyer may keep the title Brushstrokes #1 or give it an official second title, which the artist records on the signed certificate of authenticity supplied with the work.
