Uhuru means freedom in Swahili, and it is the word Kenya uses for the independence it won in 1963. The flag raised that year gives black to the people, red to the blood shed in the struggle, green to the land and white to peace. Mulembe, the maker's store name, is the Luhya word for peace, so the white stripes carry the store's name as well.

Beaded drop earrings in the colours of the Kenyan flag, handmade in Kenya. Black, red, green and white seed beads run in diagonal stripes down a long diamond, with gold toned beads between the rows and a faceted gold bead at the tip. Uhuru is the Swahili word for freedom, and the colours carry the meaning of the flag: black for the people, red for the blood shed for independence, green for the land and white for peace. They are lightweight and suit Madaraka and Jamhuri Day, a family celebration, or any outfit that wants a flash of colour. They hang from gold tone fish hook ear wires.
